What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files that visited websites send to the user’s browser (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera, etc.), where they are stored to then be retransmitted the next time the user in question visits the specific website or page.

During the navigation of a website, the user can also receive cookies from other websites or web servers (so-called “third-party” cookies). Technical cookies are those used for the sole purpose of “transmitting communication over an electronic communications network, or as strictly necessary in order for the provider of a service of the company, explicitly requested by the subscriber or by the user, to provide the service in question” (see Article 122, Paragraph 1 of the Code).

Profiling cookies, on the other hand, are cookies used for creating user profiles in order to send advertising messages in line with the preferences shown by the same user with regard to browsing the internet. Article 122 of the Code makes reference to profiling cookies stating that “the storage of information in the terminal device of a contracting party or user or access to information already stored is permitted only on the condition that the contracting party or the user has consented after being informed using the simplified methods referred to in Article 13, Paragraph 3” (Article 122, Paragraph 1 of the Code).
